Program Title STEP RIGHT UP! McNeal's Marvelous Medicine Show is About to Begin...
Character Name Violet McNeal

Program Description The medicine show era (1800-1940) offered a unique blend of oratory, theatre and marketing in a time when doctors were rare, medical practices painfully barbaric, and germ theory littleknown. Home remedies, patent medicines and self-help almanacs abounded. Violet McNeal, with her Victorian sensibilities, business acumen and natural flair for drawing a crowd, was one of only a handful of women in the business. As "Princess Lotus Blossom" she sold an astonishing array of cures; as Violet, hers was a dynamic voice in the "advertising as entertainment" style of marketing that prevails today. Medical claims in the 21st century are little different than they were over a hundred years ago.
