<b>NMHC Centennial Projects</b>

Centennial Projects Completed by the NMHC Centennial Planning in Six Communities - $26,000 Dr. Jon Hunner, NMSU, Elmo Baca, independent scholar, and Dr. Craig Newbill met twice in six communities around the state to solicit local input for community events. "Survival Along the Continental Divide: An Anthology of Interviews," by Jack Loeffler was completed and published by UNM Press in 2007. A six part radio series comprised from these interviews was put together and broadcast in over 20 radio stations statewide. (included in the $26,000 figure above) "Songs of the Cowboys" Tour - $(20,000) nine communities across the state received free concerts pertaining to the first book of cowboys songs to be published. The book was published in New Mexico in 1908. The scholar/presenters also visited domestic abuse shelters, schools, and senior centers in addition to performing in the evening concerts. Grants for the RFP, "What Does it Mean to be a New Mexican?" - (Almost $200,000 has been awarded to date with about $50,000 in funds dedicated to this centennial grant line for the next two years.) Over two dozen centennial grants have been awarded by the NMHC in the past two years and an additional 13 grants for $47,000 was awarded by the State of NM for the Centennial. The State of New Mexico Centennial Grants were managed by the NMHC also. Centennial Projects Underway by the NMHC "The NMHC Online Atlas" - $70,000 � ($75,000 including launch and advertising) the online atlas includes over 20 historic maps of NM which can be overlain upon and interact with one another. The atlas is designed for use by both professional and casual users. Google Earth software is used to run the site which is a companion piece to the print atlas being published by UNM Press ($20,000 publication subvention by NMHC). Creation of four test sets of curriculum materials is being completed, with six lessons per set to be created and tested by educators. Centennial Projects Recently Approved the NMHC Board of Directors "Celebrating New Mexico Art: From Ancient to Modern" - $98,000 for the New Mexico Museum of Art to create 1) a permanent exhibition, 2) a traveling exhibition, 3) a related publication by the Museum of NM Press, and 4) create and distribute visual materials (laminated posters) drawn from the major exhibition that are suited for exhibition in libraries and public schools. �Watershed Consciousness in the Greater Southwest� - $75,000 for Lore of the Land, Inc. to conduct over 125 oral (aural) histories and produce a series of 13 half-hour radio programs exploring Watershed Consciousness from indigenous perspectives along the Rio Grande, Mancos. San Juan, La Plata, Gila Rivers and expand the scope of the project to also include the Pecos and Canadian Rivers. The oral histories will be collected between June 2009 and December 2010, with the 13-part radio series to be completed by the end of the project or December 31, 2010. Total Expenditure to date: $494,000

Centennial Online Atlas of Historic New Mexico Maps

Travel through time and learn the stories told through historic maps. The Centennial Online Atlas of New Mexico Historic Maps features 20 historic, interactive maps, annotated with the stories of the people living, traveling, and working in New Mexico at the time, as well as pictures, audio, full text books, and oral histories.
