National History Day Contest The New Mexico Humanities Council invites history teachers of grades six through twelve to participate in preparing their students for the New Mexico State National History Day Competition. Workshops are given around the state each autumn help teachers integrate National History Day activities into the curriculum.
Regional History Day contests are held annually in the spring, and regional winners compete in the NM state finals in April. The top two finishers in each category at the state contest become eligible to advance to the National History Day competition held each June at the University of Maryland at College Park.
History Day is an exciting way for students to study and learn about historical issues, ideas, people, and events. This year-long educational program fosters academic achievement and intellectual growth in addition to acquiring useful historical knowledge and perspective during the competitions, students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills that will help them manage and use information now and in the future. History Day also promotes continuing education for secondary school teachers, and provides history teachers with an innovative teaching tool.
New Mexico State History Day is made possible by the generous support of New Mexico Humanities Council and the New Mexico Dept. of Cultural Affairs. History teachers of grades six through twelve who are interested in participating in History Day should contact the state coordinator, Trevor Carter: 505-277-3474 or historyday@nmhum.org |
